We all arrived home last night from our weekend games.  We travelled to Squamish on Saturday to play Quest.  It was a cool cloudy day but the team was up for the game as we knew that this would be an excellent game.  We started very well and knocked the ball around keeping possession.  Everyone on both teams seemed up for the game.  Both teams had some early chances but no one could take full advantage of the chances.  In the 23rd minute Alanna Bekkering picked up the ball and raced down the left wing pulling the defenders over towards her and then released a great square pass to Jaydene Radu who side footed the ball into the net to give us a 1-0 lead.  Quest obviously wanted to try to get it back quickly but we were determined not to allow that to happen.

We put pressure on their back line and attempted to cut off any ball that was played out from the back.  Quest is a very good team and they had a couple of chances but Emily Edmundson was excellent in getting her first shut out of the year.  We were happy with the win as this moved us to 5-0-0 and remaining in first place in the PACWEST league.

The next day we played Langara on a stormy day in Richmond at Hugh Boyd Soccer field.  This is a grass pitch which was pretty torn up from the day before where Langara had played UBCO.  The wind was blowing very hard and the rain was hammering down.  This would be the first heavy wet day that we had played on this year.

Alanna Bekkering hits turf vs UNBC (Sept 1, 2013 Snucins)

We started and the focus was on putting pressure on their back line and seeing if we could grab an early goal.  Unfortunately that didn’t happen but we did score early in the second half as in the 46th minute Alanna Bekkering roared past the defenders and placed the ball into the corner of the goal giving the Langara very little chance.  We had a few more chances but could not finish it, which was unfortunate.  In the 88th minute a Langara player broke through our defense forcing Emily Edmundson to come out to cut down the angle.  She went down on the ground giving a wide barrier but the ball slipped past her.  The Langara player fell over Emily falling to the ground.  The referee’s whistle sounded and she pointed to the spot for a penalty kick and a yellow card to Emily.  This was an unfortunate situation for TRU.  The Langara stepped up and buried her shot past Emily to tie up the game.

We went at them for the last few minutes but just couldn’t find the net.  We dropped our first points of the year but remained undefeated.  Everyone hit the showers and we were all soaked and cold.  We will now start to work on the upcoming weekend as we visit Capiano on Saturday and then take the ferry over to Naniamo to play VIU on Sunday.  We played both of these teams in our first two games of the year.

It was another exciting week for the WolfPack and we look forward to the week ahead.
