Fans of the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack Men’s basketball team will get their first chance to see their team in action tomorrow night (Oct 5).
The WolfPack will be entertaining the N.A.I.T. Ooks of Edmonton, Alberta in an exhibition game at 6:30 pm on the Warner Rentals Court at the Tournament Capital Centre.
The Ooks play in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference.
Thompson Rivers head coach Scott Clark says training camp and the teams controlled scrimmages to date have been slow. “We have a lot of new faces with only five or six veterans back. With that, there is a lot of teaching, a lot of learning. We are behind where we usually are at this point of the year. But everyone ends up at the same spot. The kids get to put on the uniform for the first time on Thursday. Everyone is looking forward to that.”
Clark says a long established relationship with the N.A.I.T. coach resulted in the exhibition game coming about. “They are coming to play Prince George as well. Mike Connelly used to be Ken’s (Athletic Director Ken Olynyk) assistant at Toronto. I did my Master’s degree at the University of Victoria with Mike so we were classmates. He coached at Lethbridge. He called me and the timing is perfect. The guys will get a chance to get some game time before they break for Thanksgiving with their families.”
The WolfPack coach says his team has to improve before they start playing for real on October 27 th when they open their Canada West regular season at home to the MacEwan Griffins at the T.C.C. “ To be frank, I haven’t liked what I have seen. If we are going to be successful there needs to be some improvement, especially in the areas of defend and our effort. If that doesn’t improve it will be a tough season.”
