The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack women’s basketball team is set to host their own exhibition mini tournament this weekend.
Following controlled scrimmages against Vancouver Island University and the University of Calgary last weekend (Sept 29-Oct 1), Scott Reeves and company will be hosting the Carlton University Ravens, the University of Alberta Pandas and the University of Fraser Valley Cascades in an exhibition tourney which kicks off Friday at the Tournament Capital Centre.
Reeves is looking forward to the weekend.
“It will be a very good test for us,” he says. “Carleton is returning their core that went to nationals last year and Alberta is always tough.”
When he looks back at his teams two controlled scrimmages and a formal exhibition game against Calgary (where they dropped a 68-60 decision after leading at the half on Saturday, Sept 30), Reeves says: “ Against VIU we shot the ball well but not so much against Calgary. I liked our level of competitiveness to play to the last whistle.”
Reeves says the most surprising aspect of his team’s training camp and exhibition season thus far has been the play of his rookies. “Our freshmen are a very special group. They are extremely skilled and have picked up on our offensive and defensive schemes very well.”
The WolfPack will play Carleton on Saturday night (7 pm) and meet the University of Alberta on Sunday morning (11 am).
The tourney begins Friday night at 5 pm with Alberta meeting Carleton. Alberta meets Fraser Valley on Saturday night at 5 pm. Carleton will Play Fraser Valley at 9 am Sunday. All games are free to attend.
Thompson Rivers opens its 2017-18 Canada West regular campaign on Friday, October 27 th when they entertain the MacEwan University Griffins on the Warner Rentals Court at the Tournament Capital Centre. Tip off will be 6 pm.
