The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack men’s volleyball team have kicked off the 2018 calendar year with a victory. Playing Friday night (Jan 5) at Mount Royal University, the ‘Pack downed the hometown Cougars 3-1.
The scores were 25-19,21-25,25-17,29-27 as the WolfPack move to 3-10 on the year. Mount Royal falls to 2-11.
TRU was led by Tim Dobbert with 15 kills. Randy Grundmann chipped in with eight with Sam Taylor Parks contributing 7. Anton Napolitano had 39 assists.
The WolfPack won the first set after jumping out to an 11-6 lead, lost the second when Mount Royal was up 16-13 going into the technical time out. In the third set, TRU trailed until they rattled off two in a row to lead 11-9 and won a marathon fourth set for the victory. This was the first of a two match weekend series between the two squads, who are both battling for their playoff lives to begin the second half of the Canada West season.
Mount Royal was led by Nick Lightfoot with 13 kills. Tyler Schmidt added 12.
WolfPack assistant coach, Cameron Secret said, “ A win is a win and those have been hard to come by for us lately. The break really helped to refresh the players and clear their heads. Going into tomorrow’s match I would like to see a more consistent level of game play and focus. We came out strong in the first and slowly lost it.”

On Match: “had a solid match from Anton in the setting position. Jordan Foot (5th year, middle, Prince George, BC) came in and made an immediate impact attacking and blocking. We did a good job from the service line as well again led by Anton with two aces. Randy Grundmann was solid both attacking and blocking with four block assists. Tim Dobbert led the team with 15.5 points.”
The WolfPack and Cougars wind up their weekend series tomorrow (Saturday, Jan 6) with a 5:30 pm MDT start time. TRU will continue their four match road trip next weekend (Jan 12-13) in Regina against the Cougars while Mount Royal will entertain Alberta.
Next home match for Thompson Rivers will be Friday, January 19th when they entertain the University of Saskatchewan Huskies on the Warner Rentals Court at the Tournament Capital Centre. Game time will be 6 pm.
