WolfPack Cheerleading set to take on next Championship in Vancouver

February 22st 2018

The TRU WolfPack Cheerleaders are off to Vancouver once again in chase of another first place title to add to their ranks. The Competitive Team dominated last season in 2017, almost achieving an undefeated season. The Team placed first at every competition and were ready for Internationals but fell just short, coming in second directly behind University of British Columbia.

The Competitive Team already competed this season in Vancouver on February 3rd, placing 1st with one of their highest scores in the programs history. Their Raw Score: 86.65 out of 95.00. Percentage: 91.21% out of 100%.

This weekend they are hoping to perform an even more difficult routine, in hopes of increasing that score to help prepare for Internationals.

In addition to the Competitive Team, for the first time in the Programs history, their Spirit Team will also be attending. This team is essentially a prep team for their Competitive Team, and is only in its 2nd operational season. Thompson Rivers University is the only school in Western Canada that will have two full-fledged teams attending competitions.

Says Co-Head Coach Meaghan Blakely: “The program has grown at such an intense and impressive rate, we are constantly looking to not just our current athletes, but everyone in years past to what led them to such a strong, competitive place. Both teams are thriving and ready to take on every challenge that comes their way. This is all a part of a long term plan for the program, to eventually see the Competitive Team competing in the United States at the highest varsity competitive level, while the Spirit Prep Team dominates on Canadian soil.”

Blakely added: “We don’t know where UBC currently stands due to a Coaching changeover and we have yet to see them at a competition this season. What we do know is that TRU is already thriving and couldn’t be more ready for that international title. Every competition is a step towards that goal in building the team’s difficulty and confidence that ultimately will pay off then. Winning that title is a huge step in where we want to see this program go.”

Captain Rachel Watters had remarks to add as well as she helps prepare her team for a goal driven season: “This year’s Competitive Team is more prepared than ever for this competition and I’m really excited to see what we can put on the mat this weekend. We’ve been practicing hard since our last competition and I can’t wait to show everyone all our hard work”

In addition, Co-Head Coach Mikayla Levy adds: “This is the first time the Wolfpack is sending two teams to a competition, which is incredibly exciting for the growth of the program. Both teams, Comp and Spirit, have been focused, dedicated and hard working the past few months. I am so excited to see what they leave on the floor this weekend!”

Competition is at the Richmond Olympic Oval. The Competitive Team competes on February 24th Saturday- 1:14pm & February 25th Sunday-9:52am. The Spirit Team performs February 24th Saturday- 3:26pm & February 25th Sunday- 11:16am.
