The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack men’s volleyball team had a test of character early in this 2018-19 season.
Playing at the University of Laval against one of the top programs in the nation, the WolfPack dropped a three setter to the host of the U SPORTS Nationals; the Rouge et Or.
TRU did it without two of their fifth year players.
The scores were 25-14,25-23,25-21 on Friday night (Oct 5).
The Pack played without their ‘two Tim’s”—Edge (outside hitter, Langley, BC) and Dobbert (outside hitter, Aichelberg, Germany).
“We had a slow start missing eight of our first 10 serves,” said WolfPack head coach Pat Hennelly. “Credit to Laval for playing great at the end of the second set. We had a huge comeback in the third set thanks to Kyle Behiels (4th year, middle, Edmonton, AB) and his serving and steady play from Sam Taylor Parks (4th year, middle, Kelowna, BC).
Behiels had five kills in 13 chances with a service ace, four digs, and two solo blocks. Taylor Parks was nine for 14 offensively.
‘Sam Elgert (1st year, setter, Edmonton, AB) set a solid game,” Hennelly added. “ Isaac Smit (5th year, Kelowna, BC) came in for Keel Haldane (3rd year, outside hitter, Terrace, BC) and provided a spark.”
Elgert had 24 assists.
“We got a really great performance from Landon Currie (2nd year, libero, Vernon, BC),” Hennelly said. Currie had 9 digs.
TRU was led offensively by Charlie Bringloe (4th year, outside hitter, Waterloo, ON) who was 12 for 29.
Laval’s top offensive weapon was Vincent Villalobos with 17 kills in 27 swings. Ludovir Maritn had three service aces and 14 assists. Ethan Ellison added 17 assists while Remi Cadoret had 10 digs.
The WolfPack will close out their Eastern Canada tour with back to back matches with the University of Montreal Carabins on Saturday and Sunday (Oct 6-7).
