After having the bye last week, the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack men’s volleyball team kick off the second half of their Canada West season at home this week.

In a battle of two nationally ranked squads, the ninth ranked WolfPack will entertain the fifth seed in the country-the Mount Royal University Cougars of Calgary, Alberta.

The teams will duel on the champ court at the Tournament Capital Centre on Friday and Saturday (Jan 11-12) . Game time both nights is 6:45 pm.

The WolfPack certainly enjoyed home court this season. They enter this weekend winners of all six matches they have played at the TCC this season.

The Cougars also enjoyed a bye week last week. They are .500 (3-3) on the road this season.

This will be a battle of two of the top offensive threats in Canadian university men’s volleyball. Mount Royal’s Tyler Schmidt (5th year, outside hitter, Calgary, AB) is leading the league in kills (220) and kills per set (4.78). But right behind him is Tim Dobbert (5th year, outside hitter, Aichelberg, Germany) of the WolfPack. Dobbert has 181 kills and 4.53 kills per set.

Two other members of the Cougars are among the Canada West statistical leaders. Tanner Greves (5th year, setter, Calgary, AB is third in assists per set (10.63) while teammate Jonathan Phillips (5th year, libero, Cavon, Sask) leads Canada West in digs (127) and is second in digs per set (2.76).

Thoughts from WolfPack head coach Pat Hennelly:

This weekend will see a matchup of two of top kill leaders in the conference. Tim Dobbert and Tyler Schmidt, both are huge parts of the offence. Mt Royal has had a very solid first half and played very consistent volleyball. We had a great home tournament and have used the bye to get in some

Extra practice time. I like having some extra time to start the second half. Mt Royal also had a bye this past weekend and should be in top form as well. We match up fairly evenly with Mt Royal having a defensive edge with our program having a serving edge. This weekend will come down to serve and pass. Both teams have great setters and dynamic offences. It should be a great weekend and I am looking forward to the start of the second semester.

Players to Watch:

Tim Dobbert (5th year, outside, Aichelberg, Germany): has a team leading 181 kills. His 52 digs is the second most on the WolfPack..
Charlie Bringloe (4th year, outside hitter, Waterloo, ON): He is second on the team with 102 kills and his 14 service aces are the third most on the team. He has 40 digs.

Anton Napolitano (3rd year, setter, Victoria, Australia): has team leading 26 service aces and his 57 digs is second best on the team.

Mount Royal:

Tyler Schmidt (5th year, outside hitter, Calgary, AB): in addition to leading the Canada West in kills and kills per set, he is also fourth in the league in hitting percent (.296).

Jonathan Phillips (5th year, libero, Caron, SK): leading the Canada West with 127 digs and is second in digs per set (2.76).
