There were a lot of smiling moms around the world on this day, but none happier than the mothers of players on the Prairie Baseball Academy Dawgs. The Dawgs gave their mothers the best gift of all on ‘Mothers Day’. That was seeing their sons celebrate a third straight Canadian College Baseball Conference championship.

The Dawgs, who won the CCBC regular season title, needed to pull out a dramatic, bottom of the ninth ending as they came from behind to beat the upstart University of Calgary Dinos 5-4 at Norbrock Stadium in Kamloops.

Pre game rose ceremony for PBA moms (Andrew Snucins photo)

The Dinos themselves, gave their mom’s a great gift as they came out of no where to make it into the championship final. They had first won a tie breaker for third place with the host Thompson Rivers University WolfPack. They then beat the Vancouver Island Baseball Institute Mariners 4-3 in the semi final earlier on Sunday. Calgary had finished dead last in the CCBC regular season.

PBA starter Myles Vincent (Andrew Snucins photo)

In the final, Calgary looked like their ‘cinderella’ status would continue as they scored five runs in the top of the second inning. Four came on a grand slam courtesy of CCBC all-star third baseman Matt Phllips (Bridgewater, NS). He hammered the ball off PBA starter Myles Vincent (LHP, Cornerbrook, NFLD). He went four innings, surrendering three hits, five runs, striking out three and walking two.

The Dawgs clawed their way back, scoring a run in their half of the inning, adding two more in the sixth, one in the eighth and the winning run in the bottom of the ninth.

PBA got to Dinos reliever Mark Baigent (RHP, Halifax, NS) from the start. CCBC all-stars Ryan Pidhaichuk (third base,Richmond, BC) and Mitch Dornblot (first base,Surrey,BC) hit a blooper over second bae and a line drive down the left field line respectively.

After catcher Travis Steinke (Red Deer,AB) was hit by a pitch to load the bases, things began to unravel for the Dinos.

Pidhaichuk scored on a fielders choice to tie things up. Then with the bases loaded and two outs, Taylor Wolstenholme drilled the first pitch he saw into right field to score Steinke for the winning run.

Another Atlantic Canadian player—Sean Harvie of Kennetcook, Nova Scotia—was the winning pitcher in relief. He pitched two innings , walking one and striking out three.

Calgary’s Phillips was one for five with the four runs batted in.Brandon Ethier was the starter for the Dinos and went five and a third innings giving up three hits, thee runs and three walks.

EXTRA INNINGS: This was the fourth and final year that Thompson Rivers University and the WolfPack hosted this event. It will move to Lethbridge, Alberta to be hosted by PBA the next two years before returning to BC. It is rumored that Okanagan College will bid for the 2016 tournament.

Hosting the Canadian College Baseball Conference championship tournament has not been a very successful experience for the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack. The WolfPack have hosted the tourney the last four years. And in each of those four years, TRU has failed to win the title.

Such is the case again in 2013.

The WolfPack won their final round robin game but failed to make it into Sunday’s semi final. Thompson Rivers knocked off two time defending champion and previously undefeated Prairie Baseball Academy Dawgs of Lethbridge, Alberta 5-3. But that left the ‘Pack tied with the University of Calgary Dinos at 2 and 2 in the round robin. Both teams were deadlocked for third place.

But, based on the tie breaking system, the Dinos got the berth in Sunday’s (May 12) 10 am semi final thanks to a 7-2 win over TRU in round robin on Friday (May 10).

The Dawgs wound up first in the round robin at 3 and 1 along with the Vancouver Island Baseball Institute Mariners of Naniamo, BC. VIBI finished second because they had lost to PBA 10-5 in the round robin.

The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack are hoping that their final hosting of the Canadian College Baseball Conference championship tournament will result in something they have never done at Norbrock Stadium before.

That is capture the CCBC title on home soil.

The WolfPack will come to the conclusion of a four year run of hosting the league’s annual playoff tournament when the five team begins in Kamloops on Thursday (May 9).

Thompson Rivers has won the title three times and each of them has been away from home.

WolfPack head coach Ray Chadwick about to be interviewed by Earl Seitz of CFJC TV

“It has been an issue for us not winning here,” says WolfPack head coach Ray Chadwick. “ The excuse has been a lot of distractions for the guys like taking care of the field or what’s going on in the stands—we are doing everything but concentrating on playing. It is an excuse. We should play the game like we do on the road any other time in the regular season. We can take care of the ball this weekend and if we do we will be successful.”

Thompson Rivers kicks off the 2013 tournament playing in the feature game of day number one. They will face the Vancouver Island Baseball Institute Mariners of Nanaimo, BC at 7:15 pm on Thursday night (May 9).

They are a team which had beaten the ‘Pack twice in the final weekend of the regular season (May 4-5) in Kelowna.

<a title="Aaron Lystang (2012-13 A.
Catcher Aaron Lystang (Edmonton, AB) isn’t putting much stock in those losses.

“They by no means have our number,” he states. “ I think we had a slip up here and there last weekend. Nothing we can’t fix that wasn’t a mental issue. “

Lystang at last years CCBC Championships (Allen Douglas photo)

“I think we have a good draw,” says Lystang. “Whoever we are going to face we are going to come out hard”

Chadwick throwing BP

Chadwick figures the draw is a little in their favor. ‘ Only in the fact that we are the home team and we get to play in the feature game the first two nights. As long as we win the first game, we can sit back and watch what transpires in the games before that. That will help us set up our rotation accordingly.”

<a title="Wataru Asaoka (2012-13 A.
Right now, the WolfPack plan to start Wataru Asaoka (RHP, Hokkaido, Japan) as their starter against VIBI. “If someone loses twice before we play our second game on Friday (May 10), and we lose on Thursday, we might have to go with our number one or number two guy. If we win, and play two games on the Friday—we could go with someone that might not even be scheduled to start.”

Chadwick said if they were to have finished first in the regular season, and been the home team—everything would have been in their favor. “We could have then pitched our number one or number two on Thursday and have them rested in time to go again Sunday in the semi final and final.”

That honor went to the Prairie Baseball Academy Dawgs of Lethbridge, Alberta. PBA, the defending league champion will play twice on the opening day—2 pm against fifth place University of Calgary and 430 pm against third place Okanagan College Coyotes.

There are four games and the home run derby planned for the Friday (May 10). Round robin play will wind up with three games Saturday (May 11) and the chance of a third place semi final.

The first place team from the round robin automatically gets a berth in Sunday’s (May 12) 1 pm final. The second and third place club will go in the semi final Sunday at 2pm.

EXTRA INNINGS: This weekend will be the swan song for at least six members of the WolfPack: Danny Moore , Kyle Sandulescu and Brent Carmichael (all of Victoria, BC), David Hole (Vancouver, BC), James Martensen (Ottawa, On) and Lystang are playing their final career games.

“It will be pretty tough to finish up after a long journey,” Lystang says. “ I couldn’t finish up with a better group of guys. I will try not to think of it (my career) ending until Sunday for sure. We are looking pretty strong and I hope we’ll be there in the final.”

This years tournament is being sponsored by KGHM International Ajax Project.
