The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack opened up their 2017 Canada West exhibition season with a match against the University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves. The WolfPack rallied from a pair of deficits to tie the Timberwolves 2-2 on Thursday (Aug 10).
The match was played at Mount Royal University in Calgary.
The Timberwolves led 1-0 at the half before rookie Josh Penney (Surrey, BC) got the WolfPack even in the 65 th minute. After UNBC regained the lead, Justin Donaldson (Kamloops, BC) scored the equalizer in the 88th minute on a penalty kick.
The WolfPack started Brady VanRyswyk (2nd year, Penticton, BC) in goal and he played the first half before giving way to Alex Ram (1st year, Leichester, England).
These two teams met four times in 2016. They had two exhibition games-UNBC beat TRU 2-1 August 12th but the WolfPack came back to shut them out 4-0 three days later. Both those matches were played at Hillside Stadium.
In league play, the Timberwolves came to Kamloops for a pair of games (Sept 10-11). They took the opener 3-2 but then fell to the ‘Pack 3-0 the following afternoon.
65 th minute: Josh Penney got the ball through and took it to the side where he slotted it in the net. TRU was down 1-0 after the first half.
88 th minute: Justin Donaldson was awarded a penalty shot with his team down 2-1 and scored.
TRU (pre season) 0-0-1 UNBC 0-0-1
TRU head coach John Antulov:
On game: “Overall I was fairly happy. We had stretches of some good play and then some times we lacked a bit by giving away possession. We utilized a lot of players and will all weekend. It was a tough game, UNBC will be a solid team this year and they didn’t give us an inch. They handled us well but I was proud of our guys because neither did we. It was a good start but we have a long way to go“
Players who stood out: “ I thought two of our new players Jan Pirretas Glasmacher (2nd year, Barcelona,Spain) and Josh Banton 1st year, London(England) were very poised at centre back by building the ball out of the back and playing smart defense. Josh Penney (1st year, Surrey, BC) did well on the flank coming on in the second half.”
The WolfPack will continue their exhibition season against the MacEwan University Griffins of Edmonton at 3 pm MDT on Friday (Aug 11). They will follow that up with an encounter with the host Mount Royal Cougars at 5 pm MDT on Saturday (Aug 12) and wind up Sunday (Aug 13) against the University of Lethbridge Pronghons at 10 am MDT.
The team will switch suitcases and then go to Oregon for exhibition matches Aug 17-22nd. Their Canada West season opener is Friday, August 25th in Prince George, BC against the Timberwolves.
The ‘Pack’s home opener is Saturday, September 2nd at Hillside Stadium when the University of Victoria Vikes come to town. It’s a 2 pm start time.
