The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack continued their 2017 Canada West exhibition season with their second game at an exhibition tournament being hosted by the Mount Royal Cougars in Calgary. On Saturday (Aug 12), they met up with the MacEwan University Griffins.

The final score was: 1-1. The ‘Pack have two draws to open up preseason play.

The WolfPack led 1-0 after the first half on a goal from James Fraser (2nd year, striker, Penticton, BC). TRU utilized sophomore keepers Lubomir Magdolen (Kamloops, BC) in the first half and Brady VanRyswk (Penticton, BC) in the second.
It was Magdolen’s first appearance since his season ended with a separated shoulder last September. It was VanRyswk’s second appearance of the exhibition campaign. He gave up a corner kick goal to the Griffins in the 65th minute.

These teams played twice last season: once in exhibition and once in the regular campaign. The exhibition tilt came at Hillside Stadium on August 13, 2016 with the WolfPack winning 2-1. The regular season match was in Edmonton, Alberta on September 24th where the two sides played to a 1-1 draw.

The teams will not play each other this regular season.

Goal scoring:

25th minute-TRU-defender Maxime Feujean (2nd year, Servais, France) sent the ball forward to Fraser. He was able to get free and score into the lower part of the Griffins net.

TRU head coach John Antulov:

On game: “Once again we had some moments where we were good and kept possession. But then we wound up getting scrambly and disorganized. We have guys who do well when we are composed and keep it simple. It’s only our second match so we know we are struggling with consistency. The guys are still working hard and have opportunities to score. We had a lot of chances driving to the net. We are continuing to see who is best at different positions. Having seven players missing this weekend means it’ll be a while until we figure everything out. But there are a lot of positives out there.”

Praises James Fraser: “James battled hard up top for us all game. He could have had three or four goals in the first half alone.”

The WolfPack will continue the tourney tomorrow (Sat Aug 12) vs the Mount Royal University Cougars (5 pm MDT) and then wind up the tournament Sunday (Aug 13) against the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns (10 am MDT).

The team will switch suitcases and then go to Oregon for exhibition matches Aug 17-22nd. Their Canada West season opener is Friday, August 25th in Prince George, BC against the Timberwolves.

The ‘Pack’s home opener is Saturday, September 2nd at Hillside Stadium when the University of Victoria Vikes come to town. It’s a 2 pm start time.
All of the WolfPack matches—home and away—will be webcast on a pay per view basis on www.Canadawest.TV.

The WolfPack are hosting the 2017 USport Men’s Soccer Nationals November 9-12th. Tickets on sale in September.
