The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack soccer teams will open the 2018-19 Canada West regular season at home.
Both the WolfPack women and men will be at Hillside Stadium to begin the regular season. TRU’s men;s squad, which won the Canada West and USPORTS bronze medals last season will open up their 15 game schedule on Saturday August 25th when they entertain the University of Fraser Valley Cascades. That match will be a 1 pm start time.
The Pack men have three straight home matches to begin the season including a Friday night, 7 pm kick off against arch rival UBCO Heat on August 31st.
Says head coach John Antulov about the schedule, “As always, it will be a very difficult schedule but happy to start the season off at home. We have a very tough schedule with having to play University of Alberta, Calgary and Mount Royal on our crossover and an always difficult Pacific schedule playing each twice. The big difference from last year is we have 9 games at home and 6 on the road. We are hoping playing many of these games at home with a boisterous crowd will help our players through this difficult schedule.”
The TRU women begin their season Saturday, September 8th at Hillside when they meet the MacEwan University Griffins of Edmonton, Alberta. That is a 1 pm start time. The opening weekend will conclude with a visit from the UNBC Timberwolves on Sunday, September 9th. That too, is a 1 pm kick off.
The WolfPack women have seven home matches including three in a row against Trinity Western, University of Fraser Valley and UBCO (Sept 29, 30 and Thursday October 4th). That Thursday match will be a 6 pm start time.
“I am happy with our schedule this year,” says TRU head coach Kelly Shantz. “Last year with smoke and fire concerns still in play we opened the season with 4 in a row on the road, so opening the season in the friendly confines of Hillside Stadium on campus is very welcome. We have 3 teams on the schedule this year (Mount Royal, Manitoba and Winnipeg) that only 2 of our players have ever played as it’s been 3 years since we last met so that is good for our team’s experience. The Manitoba and Winnipeg games are here in Kamloops in September so a great chance for our fans to see these programs play here. Other than that, the routine 4 game in a row stint against the 4 Vancouver/Island universities and the home and home rivalry with Kelowna’s UBCO make for an action packed year. We are excited and looking forward to it.”
All of the WolfPack home matches and some of their away matches will be webcast on a pay-per-view basis on Canada West TV. www.canadawesttv.com
