There season might not officially start until the New Year, but that isn’t stopping the newest team in the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack family from beginning to prepare.

Women’s seven’s rugby joined the varsity sports offered by Thompson Rivers University last year as part of a Canada West Athletic Association trial project.

The WolfPack women’s rugby sevens will be holding an open tryout September 23rd at Hillside Stadium.

Well-respected local rugby coach Derek Pue is back at the helm of the WolfPack assisted by Jesse Olynyk, herself a former university player.
“Our tryout is a chance for TRU students to discover the game of Rugby Sevens as well as show the TRU Coaching staff their athleticism and ability,” Pue states. “ You don’t have to have previous rugby experience. The coaches want to see cross over athletes that have a desire to compete and want to have fun in a high performance environment. Rugby Sevens is the latest Olympic Sport and this program is part of the Canada West University Sevens Pilot Program, which is being used to identify athletes who could potentially move up to that level, which is incredibly exciting. “

This is the second year of the pilot project. Pue has a number of returning players but can always use more. “ We are looking for a few interested and committed individuals to round out our roster. Our TRY7s open tryout will give us the opportunity to touch base with anyone who might be interested in joining our program.”

The inaugural season of women’s rugby sevens was met with a lot of optimism from not only local rugby organizations but also other squads in the Canada West and the university itself. “We have had great support from Curtis Atkinson (TRU Athletics Director) and Matt Milovick (Vice President Administration and Finance at Thompson Rivers).” Pue adds.” We think with this support and a full pre-season of training we can be prepared for the three tournaments we will participate in during the Winter semester.”

The open tryout is set for Hillside Stadium on September 23rd from 10 am-2 pm. Registration will start at 10:30 am after registration. Athletes should bring cleats or running shoes, water, a light lunch along with a student card or Student number.

The WolfPack plan to have follow up sessions at Hillside on September 30th and October 14th (9-11 am both days). For more information, you should email rugby@tru.ca .
